Font’s Point

See amazing geological formations from Font’s Point in the Borrego Badlands. Nicknamed California’s Grand Canyon, it was carved out by water millions of years ago. Today, Font’s Point offers sweeping vistas of sandstone formations in a beautiful desert landscape. You reach Font’s point by driving, but it’s recommended for 4WD vehicles only. If you’d rather not drive yourself, you can take a Jeep tour.

Go Golfing

Borrego Springs features a few amazing golf courses that are perfect for an afternoon outdoors. La Casa Del Zorro partners with the Rams Hill Golf Club and the Borrego Springs Resort Golf Club, offering free transportation to and from both courses. Rams Hill’s course was designed by Tom Fazio and has lakes, streams, waterfalls, and amazing views of the surrounding mountains. Borrego Springs Resort’s 18-hole course features beautiful lakes and palm trees, and is good for golfers of any level.

Kesling’s Kitchen

You’ll find Kesling’s Kitchen in the Borrego Art Institute, a nonprofit organization that provides classes, demonstrations, and events for the community. The restaurant serves gourmet wood fired pizzas, as well as sandwiches, paninis, and salads. They also have rotating craft beers and wines on tap! Try a local brew and the Blue Canard pizza, topped with scallions, shredded duck confit, blue cheese, and figs. Take home one of their homemade desserts for later.

Bighorn Fudge Co.

Bighorn Fudge Co., also known as The Fudge Factory, has sold more than 100,000 pounds of fudge since it first opened. They craft their fudge with rich butter and cream, offering flavors that range from traditional milk chocolate to the more adventurous Spicy Mexican Chocolate, Jalapeno Chocolate Swirl, and Jelly Donut. Stop by and take home a souvenir piece of fudge. You can also purchase their fudge online.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Wildflowers

From mid-February to early April, beautiful wildflowers burst into bloom throughout the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. 2016 is the Year of the Lily – you can find desert lilies at the north end of DiGiorgio Road, Vista Del Malpais, and Arroyo Salado Primitive Campground. Desert sunflowers and dune primrose are also blooming at Henderson Canyon Road. Visit a few of these spots to see some truly unique and striking flowers!

Hiking in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

The Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is California’s largest state park and has hundreds of miles of hiking trails. Spend an afternoon outdoors exploring the area. The Borrego Palm Canyon Trail meanders 3.5 miles to shady palm tree oasis. For more of a thrill, choose The Slot, a short hike that takes you through narrow openings in towering rock formations. Our favorite is the Wind Caves Trail, a 1.25 mile exploratory adventure. Climb over and through “caves” in sandstone formations that have been eroded by wind.

Day Trip to Julian

The quaint town of Julian is less than an hour away from Borrego Springs and makes a great day trip destination. It was founded during the California Gold Rush and has retained its small-town feel. Unwind in the fresh mountain air and take in views of the Cuyamaca mountains. Visit the Julian Pioneer Museum to learn about the town’s history and see what life was like in the 1800s.

Moms Pies

No trip to Julian is complete without a slice of apple pie. Moms Pies is a Julian institution that has been baking delicious pies for over thirty years. They offer over twenty different varieties, from traditional apple to chocolate pecan. We recommend a slice of the Apple Boysenberry with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Julian Hard Cider

Julian Hard Cider uses Julian’s famous apples to make some of Southern California’s best hard cider. Their Miner’s Saloon,” located in a former apple packing building, features live music and BBQ. Stop by for a cider tasting and try their different flavors, including Apple Pie, Cherry Bomb, and Razzmatazz.

Slot Canyon

Venture out to Slot Canyon, a breathtaking natural rock formation in the heart of the Anza Borrego State Park. It’s free to enter and surrounded by miles of desert roads that are perfect for off-roading. Quick tip: the trail is very easy to miss so stop by the visitors’ center for clear directions before you head out. As you make your way down into the canyon, you’ll weave through rocks that reach up to 100 feet! It may be a tight squeeze at some points so proceed with caution. Keep an eye out for the natural rock bridge overhead and snap lots of photos along the way!

Make your way to Ghost Mountain before the sun goes down. The entire trail spans almost 15 miles, but you can cut the distance if you drive through the dirt roads to the Ghost Mountain trailhead. The terrain is relatively easy and the trails are both well marked and well traveled. When you near the peak of the mountain you’ll find an abandoned homestead from the 1930s. Take one look at the striking, seemingly endless desert valleys and it’s easy to understand why it would’ve been a great place to build a home!

Carlee’s place

After spending your day among nature, grab a bite at Carlee’s Place. The no-frills restaurant and bar has been a neighborhood staple since 2010. Locals and visitors frequent this spot for its delicious homemade entrees, live entertainment, welcoming crowd, and laid-back atmosphere. Everything on their expansive menu is made from scratch and cooked to perfection. Try the Steak Bites appetizer – a marinated New York strip on garlic bread served with a spicy barbecue dipping sauce – and wash it down with a cold beer!

Borrego Art Institute

Get inspired at the Borrego Art Institute! The gallery is actually a 65-year old landmark that was renovated and redesigned by modern California architects. Inside you’ll find an awe-inspiring open space filled with art installations and exhibits. During the month of December, don’t miss the Chinese Brush Painting Society Show, a display of ancient calligraphy techniques that have been preserved throughout history. There’s even a pottery program that holds open classes and workshops throughout the year.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

With over 650,000 acres of land, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is the largest desert park in America. It’s a national natural landmark with numerous campgrounds, wilderness areas, nature reserves, and over 100 miles of hiking trails. Our favorite trail is Whale Peak. The high-elevation route spans 4.5 miles and offers stunning views across all of Anza-Borrego Park. Be sure to put on lots of sunscreen and pack plenty of water!

Metal Sculptures in Galleta Meadows

Over 130 life-sized metal sculptures are scattered throughout the sands of Borrego Springs. You can find prehistoric animals, historical characters, and a daunting 350-foot-long serpent. This public attraction draws in visitors from around the globe. The artist, Ricardo Breceda, brings life and movement to the installations by capturing each creature in motion. Drive through the surrounding roads to see the amazing artwork inspired by the beasts that roamed the area millions of years ago!
