Exploring Lake Tahoe | South Lake Tahoe, California

Lake Tahoe is a truly beautiful setting for a number of outdoor adventures. In the winter, an average of 300-500 inches of snow a year makes Lake Tahoe one of the best places to go skiing and snowboarding in California. South Lake Tahoe in particular combines exciting dining and nightlife with exhilarating outdoor activities, providing visitors with the ski trip of a lifetime.

Basecamp South Lake Tahoe

A unique experience awaits you at Basecamp South Lake Tahoe. Basecamp hotels are committed to providing guests with the modern features and décor of an upscale hotel at affordable rates. The outdoorsy style of the hotel will make you feel like you’re staying at an elegant campsite. Basecamp has a Beer Garden and multiple decks to relax on, including a Spa Deck with a fire pit and breathtaking views. The hotel is only a 5 minute walk to the lake, and a 4 minute walk to Heavenly Mountain Resort. Relax with the Apres-Ski Package, which includes s’mores and two drink tokens each night of your stay, a fitting for equipment at Black Tie Skis, and up to 20% off of gear rental.

Heavenly Mountain Resort

Heavenly has some of the best views of any resort in Lake Tahoe. The popular ski resort is conveniently located right in South Lake Tahoe, unlike other resorts that can be up to an hour’s drive away. Heavenly has great skiing and snowboarding, as well as a tubing hill and a mountain coaster, a thrilling 3,400-foot long ride down the mountain. The resort is so large that it stretches into Nevada, so you can ski in two states in just one day. Enjoy a day on the slopes, and then be sure to stick around for Heavenly’s exciting nightlife.

Scenic Gondola Ride

See Lake Tahoe on a scenic gondola ride. For 2.4 miles, admire expansive views of the lake, snow-covered mountains, and beautiful blue sky. During the ride, you’ll stop at The Observation Deck, a great photo opportunity offering views from over 9,000 feet up. When you reach the top of the mountain, spend some time exploring, grab a bite at one of the restaurants, and do happy hour at Tamarack Lodge.

Snowmobile Tour

Embrace your sense of adventure on a snowmobile tour. Lake Tahoe Adventures offers five different snowmobile excursions through Hope Valley and the Sierra Nevada. Start off with a short instruction period where you’ll be briefed on safety and how to drive your snowmobile, and then follow a guide through breathtaking terrain. Tours last from 1-2 hours, and Lake Tahoe Adventures provides helmets, boots, and gloves, as well as a free shuttle from most major hotels and resorts in South Lake Tahoe.

Sprouts Café

One of the most popular restaurants in South Lake Tahoe, Sprout’s Natural Foods Café serves organic and vegan foods that are both healthy and delicious. Their extensive menu includes sandwiches, salads, soups, bowls, bagels, burritos, smoothies, and juices. Try the Cous-cous Hummus Burro, a spinach tortilla with cous-cous, homemade hummus, cucumber, tomato, red onion, black olives, tahini, and green onions. Pair it with their “Whole Damn Garden” juice, a blend of carrot, beet, celery, parsley, garlic, and wheatgrass, and you’ll be ready for a day of Tahoe fun.

August Outdoor Escapes | Lake Tahoe, California

Mark Twain once said that Lake Tahoe was “the fairest picture the whole earth affords.” Stunning blue water and lush forests take your breath away at every turn. Whether your ideal vacation is made up of adventure or relaxation, Lake Tahoe’s 71 miles of shoreline has something for everyone. Stay at an elegant hotel and kayak through North Lake Tahoe, then head east and south to see the area’s most beautiful spots.

The Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe

The Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe is an award-winning luxury hotel in North Lake Tahoe. The hotel affords an elegant wilderness stay, reflecting its mountainous surroundings with features like in-room fireplaces, floor-to-ceiling windows, and complimentary s’mores at nighttime fire-pit gatherings. Make your Lake Tahoe getaway extra special with the Discover With You package. It includes deluxe accommodations, breakfast each morning, a s’mores welcome gift, and a $100 hotel credit per night of your stay, which you can use at the hotel’s restaurants, lounges, spa, and more.

North Shore Kayak Tour

Tahoe Adventure Company offers both land and water adventures all around Lake Tahoe. We recommend their North Shore Kayak Tour, a 3-6 mile trip through the pristine waters of North Lake Tahoe. Highlights include King’s Beach, Crystal Bay, and the deli spread lunch and snacks that are included with the tour. If you’re still feeling adventurous after you return to land, sign up for a different adventure or one of Tahoe Adventure Company’s multisport excursions.

Lone Eagle Grille

Styled to resemble a Tahoe lodge and boasting a beautiful lakefront view, the Lone Eagle Grille is a perfect lunch spot. Take a seat next to one of their many panoramic windows and enjoy seasonally inspired dishes. For a starter we recommend sharing the California Asparagus Salad, tossed with soft-boiled egg, manchego cheese, pine nuts, and lemon vinaigrette. Lone Eagle Grille also serves some of Lake Tahoe’s best burgers and sandwiches, like the Slow Roasted Pork Shoulder Sandwich, a mouth-watering combination of tender meat, pickled carrots, onions, and baby spinach, and spicy aioli.

Sand Harbor

Cross into Nevada and spend a day at Sand Harbor, a 55-acre stretch of Lake Tahoe featuring serene beaches, coves, and forest. Go for a swim or a scuba dive in the lake, or relax in the sun on shore. Be sure to pack a lunch to enjoy in the shady picnic area, and then explore Sand Harbor’s short trails. The Sand Harbor to Memorial Point Trail is a half-mile route that takes you to peaceful beaches and vistas, and the Sand Point Nature Trail ends in incredible views of the lake.

Emerald Bay

Take a day trip to South Lake Tahoe to see the famed Emerald Bay, one of Lake Tahoe’s most celebrated spots. Enjoy sweeping views of the bright blue bay and surrounding forest from 600 feet up at Inspiration Point, or from the six miles of shoreline at D.L. Bliss State Park. You can even venture out by boat to Fannette Island, a small outcropping in the middle of the bay that affords 360-degree views of Emerald Bay.

Go all the way to the top of the mountain and grab a hot chocolate in the village before you head back down.

Bridgetender Tavern & Grill

Grab a bite at the Bridgetender Tavern & Grill, a popular neighborhood spot that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner right along the Truckee River. Known to locals as “The BT,” the restaurant carries a wide selection of draft beers and some of the best burgers you’ve ever had. The atmosphere is casual and inviting, and both the staff and regular patrons are consistently friendly. We love the Rocky Mountain Elk Burger. It’s six ounces of delicious, medium rare elk topped with Monterey jack cheese and their very own blueberry barbecue sauce.

Noel Nights

Noel Nights have become a winter tradition in the Tahoe community. The Village at Northstar transforms into a holiday wonderland for the first three Thursdays in December. Bring your family and friends together for this heartwarming celebration. Gather around the 35-foot tree, listen to holiday carolers, take pictures with Santa, and ride a sleigh through the village! There’s no better way to experience the holiday cheer.
