San Luis Obispo was our first stop on the Pacific Coast Highway route from Los Angeles to San Francisco. It's a pleasant town and the Mission is well worth a visit, but best of all was the delightful Garden Street Inn. It's a handsome Edwardian mansion with a welcoming entrance decked with pots of flowers. The spacious entrance hall has been made into a comfortable lounge, where guests are offered complimentary hors d'oeuvres and wine in the early evening. (It's also used for breakfast, which is included in the price.) Each room has its own distinctive furnishings and character. There is nothing of the 'chain' hotel here - it's a family-owned establishment which retains a tradition of personal attention and gracious hospitality. I can't recommend it too highly. And in case you're wondering how much all this old-world elegance costs - take a look at the website. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
